Fast cattle trade yields high prices
A FAST trade and high prices were again achieved at Derby Cattle Market yesterday, despite the decline in demand experienced at other markets earlier in the week. A top price of £598 was paid for a Charolais steer from Mr R. J. Brown, of Spondon. Three more steers from the same vendor sold between £530 and £568 each. Hollingworth Brothers, of Mansfield, sold a black steer at £528. Another black Hereford, from Mr G. H. Smith, of Ockbrook, made £520 and Friesians sold to £508. Two Charolais steers consigned by Mr J. Lomas, of Brimington, realised £500 and another Friesian from Mr S. Read, of Stanton-by-Bridge, sold for £507. From the heavyweight killing heifers forward, Friesians sold to £448, black Herefords to £438 and a black heifer from Mr J. Oakes, of Riddings, realised £416.
Young killing bulls
From the entry of 300 young killing bulls, a Friesian from Mr S. W. Jackson, of Barton-in-the-Beans, made £473 and another Friesian from Mr T. Just, of Dale Abbey, £454.
Strong store and young cattle
The consistent entry of store cattle attracted a large complement of buyers, with prices even better than last week. Eight Simmental cross steers consigned by Mr Cliff, of King’s Bromley, sold to £448, and two Charolais from Ashbourne College made £420 each. Four strong Friesians from Mr P. R. Hibbert of Egginton, realised £372 and a pair of Simmental heifers from Mr J. B. Smith, of Ockbrook, made £350. A further consignment of steers from Mr C. Rawlings of Hanbury, sold for £348 each, and three from Mr Key, of Newton, made £342 each. Young black Hereford steers were selling between £250 and £298 each, and Friesian bullocks between £220 and £280 each. From the excellent entry of store heifers forward, eight Charolais from Mr J. Foster, of Shirley, sold between £302 and £369 each, and an odd Simmental heifer from Mr J. W. A. Dicken, of Mickleover, made £368. A pair of black heifers, from Mr Allsop, of Kirk Ireton, sold for £335 and strong black Herefords sold to £338 each. Generally bunches of black Hereford cross heifers were selling between £260 and £302 each, red Hereford to £286 and very young Hereford cross heifers between £200 and £240.
Cows with calves at foot and suckler cows
A Charolais cow with two Hereford cross heifer calves sold to a total of £692. A red Hereford cow with bull calf made £538. An in-calf Charolais suckler cow left the ring at £418.
BARREN COWS
A good show met a fair trade with an overall average of 86p kg. The highest weight was 781kg at 65p and were well sought-after, the top price for these was £517. Friesian cows from Barratt Brothers, of Hilton topped the entries. The highest average was £457.60 (74p) for an animal from Mr A. J. Ward, of Heath. A price of 75p (£427.50) with two Hereford cows from Mr J. Armett, of Castle Donnington, making 76p each and a red poll 74.5p. Ayrshires made to 64p and Jerseys to 62p.
DAIRY CATTLE
A smaller entry were on offer, with a top price of £500 being paid for an in-calf Friesian cow sent in by C. N. Stevens and Sons, of Stanton-by-Dale. A newly-calved Friesian heifer from Mr C. A. Thorley, of Hatton, realised £454.
CALVES
A similar entry of 300 young and reared calves met with another firm trade, producing some excellent prices, particularly for Hereford bull calves. The top price was £140 paid for a Hereford bull from Stevenson Brothers, of Duffield. Another Hereford from Mr S. J. Holland, of Sutton-on-the-Hill, left the ring for £133. A fine Charolais bull calf from Mr W. J. Bagshaw, of Church Broughton, realised £120. The heaviest reared calves from Mr J. Hollingworth and Mr A. Taylor, of Stoke, sold for £80. Strong black-pied young heifers from a Charolais from Mr G. Utting, of Spondon, made £101 and another reared Friesian from the same vendor £89.
